Merry almost Christmas everyone! I can’t believe we’re already approaching November. This year has gone by in a flash, I’m honestly glad for it though. I am dreading the cold weather but secretly wishing for a white Christmas, haha! Is anyone else like that or is it just me?
I absolutely adore the scenery of an all-white Christmas but cannot handle the cold long enough to get the mail from the mailbox. Besides the harsh weather, snow just makes everything look super festive. Anyway, with Christmas approaching, there are sure to be lots of holiday parties.
There are obviously going to be lots of Christmas office parties and Santa gift exchange parties, but my absolute favorite is the ugly Christmas sweater party. People dress up in the most outrageously ugly Christmas sweaters, play lots of fun games, and even hold contests to see who shows up in the ugliest outfit.
It is super fun but will be even more exciting when you make the sweater yourself. You can get as creative as you’d like and you can actually hold a sleepover/gathering with your friends where all of you DIY your sweaters for the actual party.
If you’re running low on ideas or inspo for your ugly Christmas sweaters, don’t worry because this post will show you over 25 of the cutest DIY ugly Christmas sweater ideas that’ll for sure make you the winner of the contest.

DIY UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER IDEAS
1. WINE CORKS SWEATER
This is a super easy ugly Christmas sweater idea. If you have a bunch of wine corks saved, make a Christmas tree out of them on your sweater.
You’ll need a hot glue gun to attach them to the sweater. Make a cute little note on a mini chalkboard stand saying ” I’m dreaming of a wine Christmas” and attach that on the top of the sweater.
Now all that’s left to do is add some sparkle with beautiful tinsels.
2. SIMPLE CHRISTMAS TREE SWEATER
If you’re looking for something that is very simple, this is the one for you. Grab a green tinsel garland and secure that on the sweater using a hot glue gun.
Make sure to create a Christmas tree shape before gluing it down. Then just add some mini ornaments to complete the look.
3. UGLY CHRISTMAS ELF SWEATER
This is another pretty simple one that is great for beginners. You can make out the Elf with some colored fabric.
Make sure to not cut out the face because you’ll be adding a mirror in its place. I absolutely love this design because not only is it easy to make, but it’s also pretty funny.
When people look in the mirror, they will see their faces, which basically means they’re the Elf, haha!
4. I PUT OUT FOR SANTA
Can you believe this Ugly Christmas sweater is made with real cookies? It looks so good. First, cut out the letters needed for “I put out for Santa” using construction paper.
Make the mini Christmas tree with tinsels and cut out a circle using white fabric for the cookies.
You can use cheap store-bought cookies because no one’s gonna be eating it from the sweater, haha. Now just glue everything down in its place with a hot glue gun.
5. THROWING UP REINDEER
I know it’s supposed to be ugly but how can anyone not love this? The reindeer is just too cute, even when throwing up (unlike me, haha).
Make the reindeer out of brown fabric and then use metallic bows and mini candy canes for the “throw up”. Use a hot glue gun to secure everything in place.
6. LEG LAMP SWEATER
If you are a fan of A Christmas Story then you are going to love this ugly Christmas sweater idea. I think we’ve all seen the iconic leg lamp in the movie, so why not recreate it for your sweater?
You will need a plastic mannequin leg, stockings, heels, and a half-cut lampshade. You’ll want to glue everything down using a hot glue gun.
Make the window using red tinsel garland, sheer white fabric, and some bows.
7. LIQUOR WREATH SWEATER
Make the ugly Christmas sweater party lit by recreating a liquor wreath sweater. Buy a mini faux wreath and glue that down first.
Grab your mini bottles of liquor and place them all around.
Lastly, you’ll want to make it “lit” by incorporating fairy lights, and make sure to add some other decorations like pine cones and holly as well.
8. BEER PONG SWEATER
This is just too cute not to recreate! Arrange the cups how you would normally for a classic game of beer pong.
Use a hot glue gun to secure them and add some cute Christmas decorations to make it extra festive. You can actually have people play beer-pong on the sweater.
You just won’t be able to take the cup away but why bother with it anyway right?
9. STRIPPER SWEATER
This is making me laugh so hard. Man, people are so creative, and Mr. Elf knows how to have a good time.
You will need a plastic straw, mini pom poms, Elf, mini empty liquor bottles, and a few dollar bills. Use a hot glue gun to secure everything in place.
If you don’t want to use hot glue on the dollar bills, you can just use paper clips or something else to secure them down.
10. A CHRISTMAS STORY SWEATER
Who remembers this scene from A Christmas Story? It’s one of my favorites because of the phrase ” I triple dog dare ya”.
You have no idea how often I say that to my friends, haha. Anyway, you can use a pool noodle to make the pole and some kind of stuffed toy to make Flick.
Incorporate some snowflakes here and there to finish the look.
11. CHRISTMAS DINNER SWEATER
Create a delicious-looking Christmas dinner sweater that everyone will be obsessed with. It may look a little daunting but it is actually very easy to recreate.
First, glue down all of the food items onto a paper plate. Carrots, peas, brussels sprouts, and slices of ham are usually the most common.
Make sure it’s dry before you glue it down or the juices are just going to run down. You can use fake or real food for this.
Then all you have to do is glue the plate on the sweater. That’s it! Easy right?
12. DIY UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER
If you are looking for something you can make very last minute, this is the one for you. You’ll need gold tinsel garland, mini ornaments, scissors, and a hot glue gun.
Cut the tinsel garland into pieces like shown above and glue them down. Add in your ornaments and you’re done!
13. UGLY A** SWEATER
Ok, this is hilarious! First print or cut out the letters to make up the phrase ” You have an ugly xmas sweater”.
You’ll want to glue down the fake costume butt on the center with a hot glue gun. Make it look festive by adding a tinsel garland and Christmas lights around it.
Then just arrange the letters how you want for the final touch.
14. BIPOLAR EXPRESS
Another funny ugly Christmas sweater you won’t get enough of. Who doesn’t love the movie “The Polar Express”?
I am a huge fan and this sweater is something I would totally recreate. Instead of writing Polar Express, write Bipolar Express instead.
Maybe that explains my mood swings, haha. Just kidding, anyway, make the train using white fabric and add some Christmas lights around it to make it look extra pretty.
15. HOT CHOCOLATE SWEATER
If you have a darker skin complexion, recreate this ugly Christmas sweater and show everyone exactly how hot you really are.
Even during the winter, haha! All you need to do is roll up white hand towels and glue them down on the neckline of the sweater to make the marshmallows.
Use brown yarn to make the chocolate drizzle and print out a hot chocolate sign to glue on your sweater.
16. FESTIVE UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER
If you’re looking for a DIY ugly Christmas sweater idea that can be done in less than 30 minutes, then this is the one for you.
Grab your hot glue gun and a green tinsel garland and start gluing it down on your sweater. Make sure you create a Christmas tree shape.
Add in your ornaments and cute decorations to complete the look.
17. THE GRINCH SWEATER
The Grinch is a big part of Christmas so it only makes sense to incorporate him into your ugly Christmas sweater. First, print out the Grinch’s face.
If you are skilled in drawing you can draw it instead. Then make the rest of his body with either red fabric or red construction paper.
Include a tinsel garland and a Christmas stocking. Use a hot glue gun to secure everything in place.
18. COOL SNOWMAN SWEATER
You’re not the only one who likes to get their party on. The snowman likes to turn on his swag from time to time too.
I’m gonna be honest, he looks a lot cooler than I would have with those glasses, scarf, and Christmas lights.
Another great idea would be if you dressed up like the snowman with all of the items so you too could be matching.
19. FEEL THE JOY
This is a super simple, cute, and funny DIY ugly Christmas sweater idea. All you need are a pair of gloves, a hot glue gun, a tinsel garland, and letter cutouts of the phrase ” Feel the joy”.
Glue down the gloves where your breasts would be and place the tinsel garland on the edges of the sweater. Glue the letters down and add a cute little bow to top it off.
20. A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Don’t have a clear theme or design in mind? No problem there, recreate this DIY ugly Christmas sweater that has a little bit of everything.
Include the Grinch, Santa, snowman, cute bows, tinsel garlands, glittery reindeer, and basically any other Christmas decorations you want.
21. MAKE CHRISTMAS GREAT AGAIN
This is so ugly, which is the goal, haha! Start making the snowman but instead of the snowman’s head, replace it with Donald Trump’s.
Make a sign that says ” Make Christmas great again” and hot glue that to the snowman’s hand. This doesn’t take much effort and will for sure guarantee some laughs.
22. DIY CHRISTMAS CARDIGAN
Just because it’s an ugly Christmas “sweater” party doesn’t mean you can’t branch out a little and make an ugly Christmas cardigan.
Hot glue lots of tinsels and ornaments on the cardigan until it’s fully covered. This would look absolutely stunning with a black or red dress.
23. CHRISTMAS FIREPLACE
If you want to go all out for your Christmas sweater this year, then you have to recreate this. You are going to need quite a few supplies for this but it’s gonna be worth it for the final result.
You’ll need a fireplace picture, mini stockings, a small stick, a tinsel garland, a mini wreath, Christmas lights, and a hot glue gun to secure everything in place.
If this doesn’t win you the award for the best ugly Christmas sweater, then I don’t know what will, haha!
24. MAMA’S LITTLE HELPERS
Don’t judge Mama’s little helpers, they are only there for moral support, lol! Grab a couple of pairs of socks and place mini bottles of liquor inside.
Hot glue these on the sweater and write down “Mama’s little helpers” on the top. Finish it off with a cute bow.
25. ELF ON A SNOW GLOBE
This is definitely on my top 3 favorites list. It’s so creative and cute. Get a large plastic bowl with a lid. Pour in some Epsom salt and place an Elf in there as well.
I suggest you hot glue the Elf so it stays in place. Place the lid over the bowl and hot glue it to the sweater. Incorporate tinsel garlands to make it extra festive.
26. SANTA’S RIPPED PANTS
Oh my, what an awkward situation! This is absolutely hilarious. You can buy a Santa stuffed animal and glue it on the sweater.
Or you can also DIY it yourself at home using some fabric and cutting the butt part to reveal your stomach.
Incorporate some Christmas lights and jingle bells here and there to complete the look.
27. CHEERS CHRISTMAS SWEATER
Seems like Mr. Snowman is tired of missing out on all the fun, haha. Get a snowman plushie and hot glue that on your sweater.
If you have an empty beer can, glue that on the snowman’s hand. Add a few other decorations like green beads, ornaments, tinsels, and Christmas stockings to make it look extra festive!
